    Princeton University seeks a highly motivated, well-qualified individual to serve as Manager of the Research Administration Training Program in the Office of Research and Project Administration (ORPA). While based in ORPA, the manager will serve as a key partner with all central offices, particularly Sponsored Research Accounting (SRA) within the Office of Finance and Treasury. The manager will be responsible for the delivery of training and professional development programs in research administration at Princeton, benchmarked favorably to other R1 institutions, and taking into account best practices for adult learning. In addition, the manager will link the training and professional development activities in research administration to Princeton’s long term strategic goals for research, and apply various techniques to improve the quality and relevance of such programs.

     

    Responsibilities

    Responsibilities

    • Develop, redesign, and deliver training and development programs, courses and curriculum for specific internal and campus-wide research administration audiences. This includes collaborating with the senior electronic research administration (ERA) systems manager on delivering training campus-wide for the new proposal development system.
    • Partner with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to create new and revised face-to-face (F2F), e-learning, online courses, instructional manuals, video tutorials, learning simulations, blended courses, etc.
    • Stay informed of new and evolving regulations impacting research administration at Princeton, and quickly develop training to incorporate these changes.
    • Evaluate new technologies to discover new and better ways to enhance instruction.
    • Assist SMEs in discovering methods of improving their instruction with and without technology.
    • Oversee and implement innovative learning strategies that help to develop and sustain a viable workforce and enhance expertise for the Princeton research community.
    • Assist in the development of a strategic plan for education and training for research administration at Princeton, spanning pre-award and post-award, including research compliance.
    • Assess initiatives linking training and development activities directly to long term strategic institutional goals and apply various techniques to improve the quality and relevance of education and training for the research administration community across Princeton.
    • Analyze and report training effectiveness through the use of evaluations, course completions, surveys, etc.
    • Ensure appropriate communications with campus audiences, including the development of website content and website maintenance.
    • Liaise with the Employee Learning Center development team(s) to implement updates for research administration training needs. Manage the research administration training in all platforms.
    • Meet quarterly with a research administration training and development steering committee comprised of major stakeholders.
    • Generate and implement ideas to increase collaboration and communication among units at Princeton responsible for research administration.
    • Oversee and support the ORPA Shared Services team.

    Qualifications

    Essential Qualifications       

    • Successful candidate must have analytical expertise with strong financial/grants management background and cost accounting standards, including knowledge of and direct experience in grant or research administration in an academic environment and experience using electronic proposal systems.
    • Advanced knowledge of research administration principles, policies and procedures and nationally-recognized best practices (including those promulgated by the Federal Demonstration Partnership), as well as pertinent federal regulations (such as the Uniform Guidance, the NIH Grants Policy Statement), cost accounting standards and the overall audit environment
    • Familiarity with the application of the Federal Acquisition Regulation, Code of Federal Regulations, Federal circulars, and major agency policies and regulations
    • Fluency in internal and external systems that support research administration; interest in using technology to work more efficiently and intelligently. Understanding of key performance indicators in sponsored programs offices and comfort level with data, reporting and metrics.
    • Knowledge of nonfederal sponsors and best practices in working with nonfederal sponsors, including industry, foundations and foreign sponsors.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills and a high level of competency with system applications are necessary.
    • Additionally, the position requires strong project management skills including outstanding organizational skills, the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and the ability to work diplomatically with people at all levels with a high degree of personal integrity, solid decision-making skills, judgment and flexibility.
    • The position requires the ability to work effectively, prioritize and be flexible in a high-paced, high-volume professional environment. Ability to analyze complex situations, identify workable solutions/alternatives and effectively balance customer service with regulatory compliance.
    • Understanding of export control regulations
    • Understanding of compliance-related responsibilities including conflict of interest in research, as well as the IACUC and IRB processes
    • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, as well as the ability to take initiative and work independently, consulting with appropriate parties as needed
    • Minimum of seven years of sponsored research administration experience or equivalent required
    • BA/BS required 

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in the development, design, and delivery of training and development programs, courses and curriculum.
    • Knowledge of best practices in adult learning, instructional design, training methodologies, and learning management systems.
    • Knowledge of the Coeus (or other major university preaward enterprise system) application, PeopleSoft Financial Systems, Pivot, and Visual Compliance
    • Understanding of Princeton's objectives, policies, organization and procedures
    • Experience in sponsored programs administration at a “Research I” university highly desirable
