    The Princeton Internships in Civic Service (PICS) program has offered unique and rewarding, paid summer internship opportunities for Princeton undergraduates over the last twenty-five years. The PICS Program Director (designated as the Class of 1969 PICS Program Director) is a new position with the Pace Center for Civic Engagement. Building on the Center's vision to make service a central part of the Princeton student experience, the integration of the PICS program will encourage greater student engagement in service. The PICS Program Director has strategic, administrative and operational responsibilities for the management of the PICS program. Ensuring the highest quality internship experience for students and for the community partners hosting students' internships will be integral to this work. Sourcing of internship placements, student development, alumni engagement, fundraising, and staff supervision are significant aspects of this role. As part of the work, the Program Director will prioritize and seek out broad and diverse perspectives, experiences and contributions from students, alumni and communities to reflect the diversity, inclusion and equity priorities of the office of the Vice President of Campus Life and the University. The PICS Program Director will report to the Director of Service Focus and will have significant interactions with campus and community partners, Princeton alumni and students.


    Program leadership and management: The Program Director provides operational and strategic leadership in guiding, planning and implementing the PICS program. Operationally, the incumbent is responsible for hiring and supporting a Program Coordinator, managing the PICS program budget, developing and maintaining PICS practices and systems, and coordinating ongoing program evaluation and assessment. The incumbent ensures program alignment and compliance with University policies, practices and protocols. Strategically, the incumbent will promote and maintain alumni engagement and cross campus relationships; make intentional connections between students' service experiences and their learning; and help to illuminate service as a central part of the Princeton student experience. The incumbent will work collaboratively with Pace Center staff to advance the values of the Center, to promote the wellbeing of students and staff, and to achieve the goals set forth for the PICS program and the larger student service experience.


    Internship integrity and stewardship: With administrative responsibility for the overall internship experience, the Program Director will establish best practices for service internships. The incumbent will work with alumni and others on campus and in communities to identify, develop, and maintain a diverse portfolio of internship opportunities that reflect meaningful service, intentional learning, substantive work and inclusive and accessible environments. The incumbent will have primary responsibility for the PICS internship application process, including identifying and maintaining systems and developing and implementing recruitment, interview and application review and selection processes. The incumbent will oversee the orientation, trainings and post-internship reflection programs to prepare and support the students before, during and after their internship experience. Similarly, the incumbent will oversee the preparation, support and outcomes of the internship partner organization experience and that of the alumni engaged as mentors and reviewers.


    Alumni engagement and fundraising: The Program Director is responsible for managing alumni engagement and fundraising for internships. The incumbent will help form and work with the PICS Alumni Advisory Council, a new body of individuals who will have a role in continuing and enhancing alumni engagement in support of PICS and the University's service mission more generally. The incumbent will work with the Advisory Council in outreach to alumni for the ongoing and expanded financial support of PICS internships, the enrichment of the internship experience and to foster relationships between alumni and student interns. Along with the Advisory Council, the incumbent will support the sourcing and review of new and existing community partners to host PICS internships and liaise with the University Office of Advancement to ensure University fundraising policies and guidelines are followed. The incumbent will also produce a PICS annual report.


    Staff supervision: A PICS Program Coordinator will report to the Program Director. The Program Director is responsible for hiring, supervising and supporting the professional development of the Program Coordinator.


    • Bachelor's Degree with 4 to 6 years' experience.
    • Demonstrated experience and success in program development and management.
    • Demonstrated experience in building relationships, working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders, and forming and sustaining effective partnerships with diverse leaders and organizations.
    • Ability to act as an inclusive leader, creating environments of involvement, respect, connection, and community
    • Ability to function both independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment.
    • Relevant experience or knowledge of the wider nonprofit landscape.
    • Experience in operational management, including budgets, evaluation, risk and compliance, staff development.
