  • Overview

    The  Associate Dean & Director of the McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning leads a staff of over twenty people who support the teaching and learning mission of the University. The McGraw Center supports undergraduates as learners, offering numerous workshops and organizing peer tutorials for specific courses and for learning across the curriculum. McGraw also supports graduate students as learners and as teachers, offering workshops for Assistants in Instruction for whom the practice of teaching is new. McGraw also provides resources and workshops for faculty (from lecturers to full professors) that guide them toward understanding best teaching practices, crafting inclusive teaching, using active learning strategies, employing digital and online learning enhancements, and more.


    Reporting to the Deputy Dean of the College, the Director oversees McGraw’s general operations, while also serving as a visible, active spokesperson and advocate for teaching and learning on campus. The Director works with faculty across campus to advance teaching and curricular innovation at Princeton through new teaching initiatives; educational and classroom technologies; learning programs and instructional design for both classroom and online environments; and graduate student pedagogy programs.


    The Director also oversees the Center’s many programs to support undergraduate and graduate student learning and academic success, including undergraduate tutoring; study halls; academic skills workshops; and more.


    Leadership responsibilities (30%)

    • Establish goals for McGraw and lead the delivery of a full range of programs and services to achieve these goals.
    • Manage ongoing growth at McGraw, focusing on innovative pedagogies (including online and hybrid teaching), course and program efficacy assessment, and skill development for campus teachers and learners.
    • Oversee the Center’s ongoing support for faculty members who want to enrich their classes with new materials, methods, and technologies.
    • Promote best practices in inclusive and equitable teaching.
    • Organize symposia, workshops, and lectures designed to promote on-going campus conversations about effective teaching and learning.
    • Represent Princeton at national meetings on teaching and learning in higher education.


    Advance teaching and learning at Princeton (30%)

    • Develop core services, including orientation for new faculty and graduate student assistants in instruction (AIs), to foster and facilitate the fundamentals of good teaching.
    • Advise faculty and academic departments on available resources for enhancing teaching and developing new courses and curricular offerings.
    • Staff the 250th Anniversary Fund for Curricular Innovation and guide faculty through the application process.
    • Collaborate with campus partners in the planning, design, and renovation of new and existing learning spaces.
    • Oversee training and support for faculty using Princeton’s Learning Management System (LMS), of which McGraw is the functional owner.
    • Serve as secretary to the Faculty Council on Teaching and Learning (CTL), which serves as the McGraw executive committee; sit with the Faculty Committee on the Course of Study; sit with the Faculty Committee on Classrooms and Schedule; and represent McGraw at senior decanal staff meetings in the Office of the Dean of the College.
    • Serve on the selection committees for the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Visiting Professors of Distinguished Teaching, and the Graduate Student Mentoring Award.


    Oversee the management and administration of the McGraw Center (30%)

    • Supervise the administration and delivery of all programs and services.
    • Manage an annual operating budget of $3.5 million.
    • Secure resources for McGraw’s programs and initiatives from central administration via proposals to the Dean of the College, as well as the Strategic Advisory Group on IT (SAGIT) in collaboration with the Office of Information Technology.
    • Manage the professional and support staff (21 FTE) and ad hoc project staff, including hiring and performance management.


    Lead select special projects (10%)

    • Lead special projects designed to enhance the undergraduate and graduate academic student experience, as well as those that will enhance faculty pedagogy.
    • Serve as a representative and resource for the Office of the Dean of the College, building strong and enduring relationships with faculty, administrators, students, alumni, and donors.
    • Collaborate with other campus centers and offices including the Office of the Provost, the Graduate School, the Office of the Dean of the Faculty, the Center for Language Study, the Center for Digital Humanities, the Council on Science and Technology, the Council on the Humanities, and Instructional Support Services.



    Essential Qualifications

    • 10 years or more experience working in an academic environment, preferably in higher education.
    • Ph.D., preferably in a discipline taught at Princeton.
    • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
    • Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to work closely and collaboratively with faculty members, administrators, students, and staff.
    • Ability to manage a large staff with a broad range of training and skillsets, including technical portfolios.
    • Ability to build and manage teams, establish priorities, delegate effectively, and meet deadlines.
    • Ability to respond with appropriate urgency when necessary, and to solve difficult problems proactively, efficiently, and empathetically.
    • Solid and confident decision-making skills and outstanding judgment.
    • Ability to secure resources for McGraw’s new and ongoing initiatives.
    • Willingness to work flexible hours.
