The Princeton University Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) provides leadership, technical support, information and training, consultation, and periodic audits of environmental, health and safety practices and regulatory compliance. EHS employs a dedicated and knowledgeable staff of 19 professional and support staff working to address health and safety issues in several broad areas including: workplace safety, occupational health, laboratory safety, emergency management, environmental programs, and general health and safety for the campus community.
Provides professional environmental health and safety services with regard to potential exposure to hazardous materials and equipment in laboratories, in support of and under the general supervision of senior staff and program managers in Environmental Health and Safety. Conducts audits and surveys, incident and accident investigations, and provides information, services and training to students, faculty and staff with a particular focus on the School of Engineering and Applied Science.
Assists EHS senior staff and program managers with aspects of laboratory-related health and safety programs, such as the Laboratory Safety Program, Biosafety Program, Hazardous Waste Program, Chemical Safety Program, Laser Safety Program, etc. with a particular focus on SEAS research spaces/personnel. This includes developing thorough knowledge of all applicable standards, codes and regulations; providing for timely dissemination of pertinent information to all segments of the University; providing training under the direction of a program manager; developing and maintaining web-based materials in support of assigned programs; and fielding technical questions.
Conducts health and safety surveys for assigned programs, including general laboratory safety, controlled substances, biological safety and animal care, and conducts or assists with various health and safety surveys in support of the Laboratory Safety Program. Develops and documents recommendations for corrective action. Through use of institutional health & safety compliance software, identifies and transmits findings and recommendations as well as track completion of remedial action.
Provides customer service with a particular focus to the SEAS research community including delivery and assembly of supplies and equipment, and escorting of contract employees.
As the main point of contact for SEAS, responds to incidents involving laboratory materials and equipment. Provides assistance to SEAS laboratory workers and to emergency responders. Conducts accident and incident investigations within SEAS as assigned by the program managers.
Other administrative tasks as assigned, e.g., purchasing materials, data management, maintaining web information, contributing to EHS health and safety newsletter, etc.
