Overview

The Fabrication/Shop Casual Hourly Technician will aid the Senior Technician and Manager of Digital Fabrication, Technology, and Research for the SoA Laboratory and the Architecture Laboratory.  The SoA Laboratory is a 1500 sq. ft. shop housing both conventional model building equipment/tools, as well as all high-tech rapid prototyping and computerized model fabrication equipment that serves the SoA students fabrication needs daily. The Architectural Laboratory is a 5000 sq. ft. construction, robotics and teaching facility located off –premise from the SoA. The Casual Hourly Technician may be assigned to either the Architectural Laboratory or the SoA Laboratory as scheduling demands. 

 

This position is temporary.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Preparing all tools and shop spaces includes but is not limited to tool maintenance (digital and analog tools), facility upgrades (installing and building shelving and custom storage), facility maintenance (cleaning and moving around heavy machinery and furniture).
  • Opening and closing shops: start-up/shut-down of equipment ensuring all safety protocols are being followed
  • Guide and assist SoA students in all aspects of Studio/Class projects, assemblies, and/or applications relevant to SoA student work
  • Assist and train Graduate shop monitors as needed.
  • Ensure all students, faculty, and staff are using the equipment properly and following all safety protocols. Guide and assist by showing proper techniques of tool usage, so that projects are done safely.
  • Report any issues such as damaged tools, noncompliant users and potential safety concerns to the Manager of Digital Fabrication, Technology and Research.

Physical Demands:

  • Stand or walk up to 2 hours at one time for 6-8 hours per day;
  • Sit for less than 2 hours during an 8 hour day;
  • Lift or carry up to 50 pounds frequently (34 – 66% of the workday) and up to 80 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the workday);
  • Lift up to 30 pounds in a range of motions from floor to overhead and up to 80 pounds to waist height;
  • Use hands for simple grasping, pushing, or pulling frequently;
  • Push or pull with forces up to 80 pounds, climb stairs or ladders, knee stand, dig, pick, weld or lie down occasionally (up to 33% of the workday); and bend, squat, kneel, reach or lift overhead frequently (34 – 66% of the workday);
  • Work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and environmental conditions;
  • Possess ability to work at heights, physical agility and full range of motion, and ability to maintain balance;

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • A degree in Architecture, Industrial Design, Visual or Fine Arts, or related field with significant experience in conventional and digital fabrication methods.
  • Strong building and model-making skills, as well as basic construction and shop skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in some, if not all, of the following areas: wood technology machinery/ fabrication, metal fabrication, digital and analogue techniques, digital fabrication and rapid prototyping and CNC equipment and technology (lasercutter, CNC router, robotic arm, etc), material handling and OSHA standards.
  • Knowledge and experience with Arduino, physical computation, circuitry, or programming.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, including the ability to communicate well orally and in writing, and to work effectively with faculty, students, staff, and others with tact, discretion, and courtesy.
  • Must be well-organized, flexible, and able to work in diverse situations and with demanding deadlines. Able to work efficiently and calmly under pressure.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, problem solve, and provide high quality support to faculty, staff, and students and programs.
  • Advanced knowledge in performing routine maintenance and oversight of a working lab.
  • Understanding of digital computation software (2D-3D software) and ability to read and create CAD files.
  • Ability to perform with a high degree of concentration, requiring acute hand/eye coordination, and to lift 50 pounds or more.
