Overview

The Data Movement Specialist will coordinate data movement in support of the TigerData service, a comprehensive set of data storage and management tools and services that provides storage capacity, reliability, functionality, and performance to campus. The Data Movement Specialist will partner with vendors and colleagues across campus to implement data movement workflows between tiers of heterogeneous storage systems. You will become an expert at navigating the features and functionality of MediaFlux and how best to connect TigerData storage systems with other campus storage used for high performance computing and/or analysis. You are also responsible for identifying best practices in data movement, troubleshooting system-level issues, as well as partnering with technical staff to ensure the data movement process completes and validates effectively. Working closely with IT colleagues, the Library, the Office of the Dean for Research, and technical staff in University departments, you also provide timely and creative support for long term data storage and retrieval for research computing.

Responsibilities

PI/Script Development:

  • Using API, design, develop, and maintain configuration to support storage management, data movement, and metadata extraction based on the needs of the research community
  • Implement automated workflows for data movement between storage tiers using MediaFlux based on provided user requirements
  • Use scripting and programming tools (bash, Python, and Tcl) and perform basic debugging and troubleshooting
  • Execute, monitor, and validate data movement between existing storage instances and TigerData using MediaFlux or other data movement tools (rsync, globus, etc)
  • Using a tool called Request Tracker (RT), help triage and support TigerData issues related to data movement
  • Document best practices for data movement based on successful executions of data transfers between tiered storage

Professional Development:

  • Grow an understanding of data movement tools and strategies to provide input on the creation of best practices as it relates to the TigerData implementation
  • Keep abreast of emerging technologies related to data storage and movement

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent 
  • 3+ years experience developing for data storage solutions or similar technology, or related coursework
  • Experience with API and/or scripting languages
  • Ability to respond promptly and professionally to customer requests
  • Demonstrated successes working in a collaborative environment, as well as independently
  • Ability to learn new systems beyond area of core knowledge
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse user base having varied levels of technical proficiencies
  • Proactively seeks information and ideas from peers, supervisors, and customers
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with data movement tools/practices like globus, rsync or others
  • Experience with linux operating systems
  • Experience in a research environment
