Overview

The Marquand Library of Art and Archaeology, is one of the oldest and most extensive art libraries in America. The collection of over 500,000 volumes covers world art and architecture from antiquity to the present and includes distinguished rare book holdings. Marquand serves the Princeton University community and scholars from around the world and seeks to hire a Library Special Collections Specialist V, Evening and Weekend Supervisor to join our team. The ideal candidate will be an energetic, production and service-oriented person for this full-time position. They will play a pivotal role in Marquand’s transition back to a renovated space in the newly constructed Princeton University Art Museum expected in 2025.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the Marquand Coordinator of Library Operations, Special Collections Coordinator, this position provides leadership for student staff workflows, oversees facilities/maintenance issues, and mediates exceptions to Library policies in the absence of Librarians and Library Operations Coordinator
  • Manages work of four or more student employees who assist with processing work assigned to position
  • Manages all aspects of shelving and stack maintenance, as well as use of assigned spaces
  • Responsible for off-site returns processing, new monographs receipt and bibliographic control, placing supply orders and maintaining supply inventory
  • Assists with hiring and training staff, monitoring and resolving staffing issues at service points
  • Assists with course reserves support, stack weeding projects, other tasks as assigned
  • Work schedule is outside of standard business hours (though subject to change in given current circumstances of temporary location due to McCormick Hall construction)
    • Academic year hours: Saturday 3pm-11pm and Sunday-Wednesday 4pm-12am (all closing)
    • Break hours: Sat 12:00pm- 5:45pm, Sun 11:45am-5:45pm, Mon- Wed, 12:15pm-8:45pm (or similar configuration)

 

This position will assist the Marquand Library Operations Supervisor, Special Collections Coordinator. They will have sufficient authority, when scheduled alone, to manage staff workflows, oversee facilities/maintenance issues, and mediate exceptions to Library Policies. They will assist with hiring and training student staff, and have a schedule that is ideal for maximum coverage for closing the Library daily, or cover hours when regular staff is not present. This staff member will also respond to patron requests and questions, and monitor and resolve staffing issues at the service point in Marquand Library. Being part of a branch library team demands that one be flexible in organizing and scheduling work activities, and the specialist must be able to identify priorities and manage workflows and sustained productivity with only periodic input from their supervisor. 

In Spring of 2021 all Marquand public and back-end services moved  into two temporary Public Service Points in Firestone Library, and one Staff Processing Area in 693 Alexander Road. This staff member is instrumental in strategizing and performing tasks relating to preparing collections and service for the transition back to McCormick Hall. They will maintain workflows and services during the transition, and assist in the move of collections and services back to a newly renovated Marquand Library in 2025.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum two years of experience in an academic, research, or special library, or a public library with a research and/or special collections component
  • Minimum of one year of practical work with supervisory experience, including training of staff
  • Ability to made decisions and work independently, as well as an affinity for teamwork, and the ability to be flexible and resourceful in a fast-paced environment as a team leader
  • Experience in an arts or humanities library collections or subject background
  • Strong organizational and excellent service-oriented interpersonal skills
  • An ability to prioritize workflows and respond creatively to rapidly changing circumstances, on a daily, seasonal and yearly basis
  • Ability to deal with pressure, deadlines, and multitasking
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Intermediate computer skills including desktop productivity software and scanning, and basic knowledge of computer hardware, printers and imaging equipment
  • Knowledge of bibliographic conventions and experience searching online catalogs or databases
  • Ability to work with bibliographic citations in several languages
  • Self-starter with the ability to prioritize, be highly productive, and do sustained and accurate detail work at a computer
  • Public service experience and service orientation
  • Must be able to lift and shelve books (using stepladders) and handle large book trucks holding approximately 300 books (other physical tasks may involve careful handling of heavy and dusty books)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Facility with ALMA cataloging, circulation and acquisitions modules or similar
  • Experience with antiquarian library or archival collections
  • Intermediate reading knowledge of one or more Romance, Germanic, or other non-English language
