Overview

The Princeton University Art Museum seeks a part-time Research Assistant for a position beginning in January through June 2025. They will report to the Nancy and Peter Lee Curator of Asian Art and will work with the Curator to assist with research on Ming and Qing dynasty paintings in the Princeton collection.


Approximately 10 hours per week. This position is temporary.

Committed to advancing Princeton’s teaching and research missions, the Art Museum also serves as a gateway to the University for visitors worldwide. As the Museum prepares for a dramatically reconceived new building scheduled to open in early 2025, the Art Museum presents six exhibitions in its two downtown venues (Art on Hulfishand Art@Bainbridge) and is touring three collections exhibitions nationally and internationally. When the new building opens, the Art Museum will initiate its new exhibitions program with nine annual exhibitions onsite and on tour.

Responsibilities

The Research Assistant will help catalogue Ming and Qing dynasty paintings in the collection, do in-depth research on a selection of the objects, as well as transcribe and translate inscriptions. The RA will also conduct research on the broader field of Ming-Qing painting history following the Curator’s direction.

Qualifications

The candidate must have a B.A. in Art History or a related Chinese studies field. Knowledge of Chinese art history, the Chinese language, and excellent research skills are necessary. This post requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information.

 

Preferred Requirements:

The preferred candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of the history of Chinese painting and have near fluent levels of Chinese. Graduate students are strongly preferred.
