Overview

Princeton University’s Program for Community College Engagement invites applications for Teaching Transfer Associates to teach, advise, and conduct outreach at a community college, with the goal of strengthening connections between Princeton and the host community college and increasing the number of students at that community college who transfer to strong four-year institutions.

For the teaching portion of the appointment, associates will primarily teach courses for the community college; one Princeton-accredited course will also be taught by each associate as part of their appointment and a concurrent lecturer appointment with the Office of the Dean of the Faculty at Princeton will be made for that course. Onboarding and orientation to the program will occur in the summer period prior to the start of fall-term courses at the community college. The appointment is for 12 months, expected to span the period of July 1 through June 30, with mandatory orientation and curriculum development activities in the summer period prior to the fall term as well as program learning and assessment activities at the conclusion of the spring term. Appointments may be renewable twice for a total of three academic years of appointment. Reappointed associates may be called upon to teach summer courses on Princeton’s campus.

We welcome applications from candidates with strong interests in teaching and advising in the community college context from all fields of study in the social sciences, humanities and the arts, natural sciences, and engineering.

Priority consideration will be given to applications received by December 16, 2024. However, this position will remain open until filled.

We encourage interested candidates to submit their application materials as soon as possible to ensure they are considered during the initial review period.

Applications should include a current CV, an unofficial graduate transcript, a cover letter reflecting on your interest in and preparation for teaching and advising in this program, and a brief document (no longer than one page) that lists the range and types of community college courses you might teach at the host community college.  While we may partner with up to three NJ community colleges in the 2025-6 academic year, applicants are encouraged to consult the Mercer County Community College course catalog (https://mercer-ss.colleague.elluciancloud.com/Student/Courses) as an example to help identify a range of courses that you might teach.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching 15 credits per year at the community college, including standard community college courses as well as at least one course accredited by Princeton but taught at the community college. Associates who are reappointed will have summer duties which may include teaching summer courses at Princeton.
  • Advising and conducting outreach to community college students in order to encourage them to transfer to strong four-year institutions. Specific advising and outreach duties will be developed in consultation with the community college, with associates receiving support and direction from the program managers. In cases where associates will exceed 15 credit hours based on the courses taught, advising and outreach activities will be adjusted down slightly to keep the duty time equitable.
  • Participating in training and professional development, as well as collaborating with program staff on the developing design of the program. Associates who are reappointed will collaborate with program directors on the onboarding and training of new fellows.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Ph.D. in a discipline taught at Princeton, conferred no more than four years prior to the time the appointment begins in order to ensure recent research experience as a graduate student. Applicants must have the Ph.D. in hand or be able to document that they will have all the requirements for the Ph.D., including the defense, completed before June 1.
  • 1-3 years’ relevant experience including college-level teaching and advising, with demonstrated success at creating inclusive classroom environments.
  • Academic background sufficient to teach courses that are appropriate for both a community college curriculum as well as Princeton’s undergraduate curriculum.
  • Recent experience at a research-intensive college or university.
  • Collaborative and entrepreneurial mindset, willingness to work as part of a team to continue to build this program and ensure its success.

Preferred:

  • Past experience at a community college - as a student, instructor, or administrator -  is highly desirable but not required.

If selected, applicants will need to have authorization to work in the United States.
