Princeton University's Primate Research Resources (PRR) Program is seeking a full-time NHP clinical veterinarian for their expanding program. The primary purpose of this position is to provide veterinary clinical and surgical support for macaques and marmosets used in neuroscience under the general direction of the PRR Attending Veterinarian.
This position provides primary clinical care of NHPs used for research and breeding at Princeton University, including general veterinary care, management of sick cases, surgical support, and oversight of welfare and behavior. The position requires strong clinical, anesthesia and surgical veterinary skills, the ability to maintain clinical records and databases, computer literacy, strong organizational skills, and excellent interpersonal skills. The position requires close collaboration with the research labs, and may offer research opportunities if the candidate so desires.
Veterinary Care & Husbandry
- Provide individualized veterinary care to ensure the health and well-being of each nonhuman primate (NHP), including preventive care such as vaccinations, dental and oral health, nutrition and weight management, disease prevention, and retirement planning.
- Perform routine veterinary clinical rounds and ongoing health monitoring.
- Stay current with veterinary care standards in NHP medicine and surgery, particularly as they relate to the research models utilized at the University.
- Assist in overseeing health monitoring, preventive medicine, and environmental enrichment for the NHP research colony.
- Support the procurement and colony management of NHPs.
- The PRR Attending Veterinarian (AV) and PRR Clinical Veterinarian (CV) are responsible for veterinary care during normal business hours. On-call after-hours duties will be shared between the AV, CV, and contracted veterinary professionals.
Behavior & Enrichment
-Support the management and implementation of the NHP Enrichment Plan.
-Assist in overseeing the social housing enrichment program under the direction of the PRR AV and the PRR Welfare & Behavior Specialist.
Regulatory Compliance
Assist the PRR Attending Veterinarian (AV) in the following responsibilities:
- Support IACUC activities, including protocol reviews, program evaluations, and facility inspections. Serve as an alternate voting member when the AV is unavailable.
- Ensure program compliance with all applicable animal care and use regulations, guidelines, and standards (e.g., USDA, OLAW, AAALAC).
- Participate in USDA inspections and AAALAC site visits.
Training
- Support and participate in training program to provide training to veterinary care staff, animal care staff, and researchers
- Support and participate in training program to develop and deliver training for the PIs, lab staff, researchers and members of the IACUC with respect to NHP care, procedures, and protocols
- Assist in writing, reviewing, and revising NHP veterinary, husbandry, environmental enrichment, surgery and compliance SOPs as appropriate
Research Support
- Assist PRR AV with oversight of experimental procedures of NHPs in accordance with institutional policies, SOPs, and approved IACUC protocols.
- Assist PRR AV perform pre, peri, and post-operative support for all NHP models, including but not limited to preop planning, surgery, anesthesia, and post-operative care.
- Participate in providing consultation, collaboration, advice, and training as needed during protocol development
Other
- Assist PRR AV and University programmatic needs in other duties as assigned and appropriate
Essential Qualifications:
- Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA-accredited College of Veterinary Medicine or possession of a certificate from the AVMA’s Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG). Must hold a valid veterinary license in at least one U.S. state.
- Eligibility to obtain a veterinary license in the state of New Jersey and national USDA accreditation.
- Minimum of two (2) years of clinical, surgical, and anesthesia experience with laboratory nonhuman primates, or completion of an accredited laboratory animal medicine residency.
- Strong knowledge of regulations, standards, policies, and guidelines governing NHP research, including the Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with veterinary, husbandry, and research staff.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, database management, and internet-based tools.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Strong preference for candidates with extensive experience in nonhuman primate clinical and surgical medicine, particularly those with expertise in NHPs used in neuroscience research.
- Willingness and ability to work after-hours, nights, weekends, and emergency shifts as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Board certification or eligibility in Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM).
- Experience interacting with regulatory agencies during inspections, site visits, or audits, including USDA, AAALAC, and OLAW.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and ongoing improvement of clinical, surgical, and anesthesia skills.
- Experience in research-related surgery and advanced imaging techniques (MRI, CT).
- Teaching experience in both classroom settings and one-on-one instruction.
- Supervisory experience in a veterinary or research setting.
- Experience managing NHP colonies used in neuroscience research, with specific expertise in cranial implant management.
- Clinical, surgical, and reproductive management experience with marmoset species.
