Overview

University Services provides centralized services that support the unique needs of the campus’ living, learning, teaching and research communities. The organization is guided by the University’s strategic framework and campus plans, and focuses on three core principles: service excellence, efficiency & effectiveness, and team & people.

 

Print, Mail & Trademark Licensing Services is one of eight departments within University Services. The department is supported by state-of-the-art equipment and a highly trained staff, and structured into four operating units that often work together:
• The print team offers comprehensive design, printing and bindery services to faculty, staff, and students in support of the University’s mission to advance learning.
• The creative team supports the creative and marketing needs of campus, offering design and writing services. Projects include logos and identity systems, posters, postcards and mailers, publications, programs, presentations, promotional items, website and social media graphics, event signage, environmental graphics and wayfinding.
• The package and mail team receives and sorts all inbound packages and mail, and then delivers to students, faculty and staff at the University’s main campus and the Meadows, Forrestal and Carnegie campuses. The team also works in concert with the print operation to provide seamless print-to-mail fulfillment services using variable data technology and postal metering.
• The trademark licensing team promotes and protects the use of Princeton’s name and trademarks domestically and internationally. Currently, Princeton has over 80 approved brand Licensees.

 

Print, Mail & Trademark Licensing Services leaders and staff are committed to a collaborative work environment that values diversity, integrity, service excellence, collegiality and teamwork. Staff are expected to maintain a flexible work schedule based on work demands. This includes occasionally working outside of standard business hours to meet deadlines.

 

Print, Mail & Trademark Licensing Services is dedicated to supporting Princeton University’s Sustainability Action Plan and efforts to achieve a diverse and welcoming environment. We provide clients with sustainable options, including wide format eco-solvent inks, and we are dedicated to utilizing socially responsible vendors and engaging with local and diverse suppliers.

 

Print, Mail & Trademark Licensing Services employees work at the Forrestal Campus, in Plainsboro, NJ. Staff are required to work on-site during operating hours (8:45 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday). There is no remote work option.

 

Reporting to the director of Print, Mail & Trademark Licensing Services, the assistant director for print production oversees the operation of the press room, bindery and mail area and serves as a digital press lead operator. This position assures the coordination between digital and production divisions runs efficiently in order to complete projects in the anticipated timeframe. Extended pressroom coverage is incorporated into the position to meet the deadline requirements of clients, and to maximize press capabilities and running time.

Responsibilities

Operation of Digital Presses

● Operation and digital output for 2-3 large digital presses, including all press functions in black and color accurate CMYK applications
● Assure accurate throughput of variable data, text and graphics
● Utilize scanner to scan and manipulate original files or images as needed
● Assure all system upgrades are performed on the digital presses
● Obtain vendor recommended digital press training to remain technologically current with software, capabilities and systems
● Assure presses are in good running order at all times
● Train designated production staff on digital presses as required

 

Production Floor Management

● Collaborate with director and associate director for equipment acquisitions, staffing needs and overall goals
● Develop specific goals to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work
● Schedule work according to due date priority
● Supervise production supervisor, production technician and mail production operator
● Train staff in safe, efficient operation of all equipment
● Ensure team is cross-trained in all areas
● Manage printing and production orders, including bindery, mailing, shipping
● Ensure supplies are maintained
● Select and maintain all equipment, including overseeing a preventative maintenance program
● Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems
● Work to meet University objectives including sustainability goals and supplier diversity
● Initiate and coordinate inventory and cost control programs
● Perform advanced skilled printing and finishing tasks: setting up, operating, troubleshooting and maintaining complex digital print equipment.
● Scheduling staff coverage to ensure production needs are met.

 

Quality Control and Production Support

● Check every order for accuracy and other special instructions
● Implement production tracking and improve quality control systems
● Accurately track errors and deadline compliance
● Oversee overall in-plant production operations, including quality control, queue management and job scheduling
● Strictly adhere to safety policies and procedures
● Assist in keeping MSDS sheets up to date and in compliance with Risk Management criteria
● Promotes sustainability and sustainable printing and mailing practices, and the conservation of University resources.

 

Management Team

● Participate in weekly Print, Mail & Trademark Licensing management team planning meetings.
● Develop and maintain key performance metrics for monthly and quarterly reporting.
● Actively contribute to strategic planning and budgeting for unit.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

● High school diploma or GED
● 10 years’ experience in digital print production operations, including bindery and mailing
● 10 years’ experience in a progressively responsible production support position with production workflow knowledge, preflighting and in a print/mail environment
● Ability to operate digital presses
● Detail oriented with the ability to multi-task
● Strategically manage and prioritize competing demands
● Demonstrated ability to lead teams and foster collaborative efforts with diverse individuals and groups
● Strong interpersonal and proven customer service skills
● Proactive problem solver with the ability to work independently and work well with others in a collaborative manner


Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

● MIS Print Software (currently utilizing Avanti Slingshot)
● Ricoh industrial printers
● Digital Press Front end software
● Office Suite
● Preflight Software
● InDesign
● In-plant experience a plus
● OS Systems
