Overview

The Department of Computer Science is looking for an energetic and talented individual to fill a newly created Network Operations Analyst role. Reporting to the manager of infrastructure operations, this position will oversee the department's academic and research network. Responsibilities

The Network Operations Analyst focuses on the department's research and academic network, and its supporting services. This position ensures the availability, integrity, security and reliability of mission critical network services. As a member of the Infrastructure Operations group, the network operations analyst bears primary responsibility for managing and monitoring network infrastructure, analyzing and resolving network problems, and regularly improving network and switching infrastructure.

 

NETWORK MANAGEMENT / OVERSIGHT:

  • Monitor, manage, and improve secure and reliable networks for the Department of Computer Science.
  • Assess the security of existing networks, identify potential risk areas, and take proactive measures to protect network resources from unauthorized access.
  • Lead and participate in network design: develop secure network architectures, develop access control policies, implement encryption protocols, and configure and manage firewalls.
  • Routinely apply critical bug fixes, security updates, and required configuration changes.
  • Routinely review, test, and verify backup and restore procedures for networking and monitoring systems.
  • Collaborate with the University's OIT to deploy and manage solutions in coordination with larger campus network initiatives.

DOCUMENTATION / SUPPORT:

  • Configure and regularly update all monitoring, alerting, and reporting for network routing and switching services.
  • Produce, update, and maintain documentation and configuration information for networking and monitoring systems.
  • Provide operational support for all network routing, switching, and related supportive services to members of the CS Department and other network users.
  • Provide on-call support on a routine schedule to perform network upgrades, execute maintenance changes, and effectively resolve major incidents outside of normal business hours.

OTHER:

  • Participate in the shared responsibilities of the department's technical staff, including assisting customers with a wide variety of simple problems and requests.
  • Assist other colleagues with lower technical skillsets.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent training/relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of work related experience
  • Demonstrated innovative thinker and creative problem solver.
  • Strong understanding of core networking technologies, including routing, switching, and security management.
  • Demonstrated skill in solving complex problems in the network environment, particularly in the areas of packet switching, routing and network security.
  • Extensive experience working in a modern Unix/Linux environment, including comfort with command line usage and shell scripting.
  • Extensive understanding of network protocols including TCP/IP and network security policies.
  • Experience with multi-vendor equipment, including Cisco and Aruba and related OS configurations.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to multiple operating systems and platforms.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, to respond to shifting priorities, and to work efficiently under the pressure of critical problems and deadlines.
  • Ability to work occasionally outside of normal working hours and be on call to perform network maintenance and support unexpected critical network failures.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with network routing and switching management tools.
  • Experience with Cisco ASA Firewalls.
  • Experience with BGP routing and IPv6.
  • Ability to leverage network automation tools to improve overall service delivery.
  • Experience working in a fast paced research and academic environment.
