Overview

The Princeton University Art Museum welcomes applications for the position of Creativity Lab Supervisor (CLS) to support the Manager of Visitor Experience (MVE) in overseeing the Creativity Labs’ programmatic schedule, activities, and daily operations. Opening in October 2025, the Creativity Labs offer creative opportunities for visitors to engage with the Museum through participatory art-making, writing, and reflection activities that foster inquiry, empathy, wellness, and imagination. The CLS collaborates across Museum departments to plan and write instructions for activities; support Princeton University teaching requests; plan audience-specific programs; and develop and teach K-12 art lessons to accompany the in-gallery curriculum. The CLS assesses the impact of programs through various evaluation methods.  

 

The CLS oversees the daily operations of the Creativity Labs, including hiring, training, and supervising a team of facilitators. The CLS is expected to work regular shifts in the Creativity Labs. As part of the Education Team, the CLS is responsible for ensuring that the Creativity Lab Team provides a welcoming and engaging experience for all visitors, promoting an atmosphere of teamwork, innovation, integrity, inclusiveness, and respect.

With a collecting history that extends back to 1755, the Princeton University Art Museum is one of the leading university art museums in the country, with collections that have grown to include more than 117,000 works of art ranging from ancient to contemporary art and spanning the globe. Committed to advancing Princeton’s teaching and research missions, the Art Museum also serves as a gateway to the University for visitors worldwide. As the Museum prepares for a dramatically reconceived new building scheduled to open in Fall 2025, the Art Museum presents three exhibitions in its downtown venue Art@Bainbridge.

 

When the new building opens, the Art Museum will open with 32 galleries and initiate its new exhibitions program with seven annual exhibitions onsite and on tour.

Responsibilities

Teaching and Staffing the Creativity Lab 

  • The CLS will be expected to work shifts in the Labs, supporting drop-in activities, teaching lessons for scheduled group visits, and overseeing programs. Additionally, the CLS will cover any unforeseen gaps in the staffing schedule. 
  • Flexibility to adjust work schedule to include evenings and weekends, as needed. The CLS’s standard work schedule will be Tuesday through Saturday, with 1 late evening per week. 
  • Perform all Facilitator duties, including opening and closing of the Labs; welcoming visitors and supporting participation in the activities; providing clear messaging to visitors regarding safety guidelines. 

 

Activity Planning and Program Planning 

  • Plan and write the instructions for hands-on activities designed to help visitors make connections with the Museum collections and exhibitions. Collaborate with the design team and oversee the production timeline of these projects. 
  • Work with members of the Education Department to develop and plan a robust program schedule for the Creativity Labs that meets the needs and interests of various audiences. 
  • Track inventory of art-making supplies and order as needed. 
  • Assist with promotion, setup, and execution of Museum programs and events, particularly programs that have Creativity Lab components. 
  • Assess the impact of programs through various evaluation methods. 

 

Supervision and Staff Scheduling 

  • Assess and manage the staffing needs of the Creativity Labs to ensure appropriate levels of support at all times. 
  • Approve time sheets in the relevant software systems (TAM and JobX). 
  • Supervise the Creativity Lab Facilitators to ensure services are provided consistently, equitably, and respectfully to all visitors. 

 

Hiring and Training  

  • Work with the MVE to recruit, hire, and train Creativity Lab Facilitators. 
  • Collaborate with the Visitor Experience Supervisor to plan regular training sessions for the visitor-facing staff, including workshops, guest speakers, and other relevant topics. 

Qualifications

Essential Requirements 

  • Experience working with the public, serving as front-line staff, including the ability to work with a range of individuals from diverse backgrounds. 
  • Background in education, studio art, museum studies, or art history 
  • 3+ years of teaching experience in a classroom, studio, art space, or comparable environment. 
  • 1+ years of supervisory experience or experience managing a team, project, or functional area of responsibility. 
  • Emotional intelligence, including the ability to recognize and respect cultural context, read situations and people, and interact with all levels of professionals and volunteers.  
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing inclusive learning opportunities for diverse audiences 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills. 
  • Ability to work as a collaborative team player who is flexible and able to adapt to meet shifting demands and priorities. 
  • A willingness to engage in continuous learning about current exhibitions and events. 
  • Strong computer skills, comfort using a variety of software, and the willingness and ability to learn new systems. 
  • Flexible work schedule required to include evenings and weekends. The standard work schedule will be Tuesday through Saturday, with 1 late evening per week. 

Preferred Requirements

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, including Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, and Zoom, is preferred. 
  • Experience working with AirTable, Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey, or other data collection platforms is a plus. 
  • Experience with scheduling software is a plus. 
  • Fluency in more than one language is a plus.
