Overview

The Coordinator of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation is responsible for oversight of physical therapy treatment and rehabilitation program for eligible Princeton University students.  This role also performs the duties and responsibilities of an Athletic Trainer; see below.  The Coordinator of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation will report to the Head Athletic Trainer for Athletic Trainer responsibilities and the Director of Athletic Medicine for matters involving any Physical Therapy programs serving the general student population.  The Coordinator of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation performs assigned tasks essential to the growth of the program of athletic medicine and the care of the athlete. They may carry out delegated responsibilities essential for the function of a Physical Therapy clinic.


The Athletic Trainer provides on-site coverage and injury care to student athletes under the guidance and oversight of the Head Athletic Trainer and direction of the University Health Services Physicians. As a part of the health care team, the athletic trainer provides injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, recognition, examination, and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. 

Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Injury Prevention 

  • Upon referral from staff physicians, provides physical therapy services to eligible University students 
  • Provides functional ability assessments and status reports to the referring physician as necessary. 
  • Provide physical therapy treatments, assistance and/or coordinate rehabilitation for post-operative, post-procedure, and complex injury cases for student athletes with all sports in conjunction with sport athletic trainer. 
  • Provide on-site coverage and injury care to student athletes during practice sessions and competitions, as assigned. 
  • Perform initial management, clinical evaluation, and diagnosis of student athlete injuries. 
  • Administer first-aid and emergency care as indicated. 
  • Refer student athlete injuries for team physician evaluation when appropriate and clinically indicated. 
  • Administer therapeutic interventions to treat or prevent student athlete injuries. 
  • Design and/or implement rehabilitation programs for injured student athletes. 
  • Apply protective or prophylactic taping, wrapping, padding or bracing. 
  • Create a safe playing environment by monitoring and controlling environmental risks. 

 

Leadership/Administrative Management 

Administrative Management

  • Review and communicate utilization of the latest evidence-based techniques and modalities to achieve improved outcomes and return-to-play following injury
  • Development and review of physical therapy and rehabilitation protocols.
  • May establish metrics for continuous performance improvement and improved patient outcomes.
  • Document evaluation and management of student athlete injury and illness in accordance with New Jersey Athletic Training Practice Act.
  • Schedule and coordinate student athlete referrals with team physicians or other relevant healthcare providers.
  • Maintain relevant injury communications with staff athletic trainers, team physicians, UHS clinicians, coaches, and student athletes.
  • Assist with annual medical clearance process for returning and incoming student athletes.
  • Assist with maintenance of an effective and efficient athletic training room.
  • May coordinate administrative aspects of Physical Therapy services for non-varsity students and graduate students which may include development and implementation of Physical Therapy appointment schedules, supervision of per-diem Physical Therapists, on-boarding, schedule development, peer review, and clinical support as needed.
  • May require identification of supplies and equipment needed to provide physical therapy services and work in conjunction with the Assistant Head Athletic Trainer to purchase items.
  • May require proper record keeping for physical therapy patients and provide monthly and end of year reports to the Director of Athletic Medicine for inclusion in the year-end annual report.

 

Training & Professional Development 

  • Attends required staff meetings, in-services, and trainings. 
  • Attends continuing education opportunities to enhance professional growth and meet the continuing education requirements of the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer and New Jersey Athletic Training Practice Act. 

Performs other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in physical therapy 
  • Must be a Certified Athletic Trainer by the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer. 
  • Must be licensed (or be eligible to apply for licensure) to practice Physical Therapy in New Jersey by the New Jersey State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners.
  • Must be licensed (or be eligible to apply for licensure) to practice Athletic Training in New Jersey by the New Jersey Athletic Training Advisory Committee. 
  • Must be certified in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or Healthcare Provider. 
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in a college setting. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively. 
  • Willingness to work nights/weekends/holidays and travel as required. 
  • Is not judgmental about differences and able to acknowledge mistakes, making amends when necessary.  
  • Be knowledgeable in principles and methodologies (e.g., Plan-Do-Study-Act, Root Cause Analysis, measurement, data collection, and analysis) needed to support and lead Quality Improvement projects and activities and/or willing to attend UHS-based Quality Improvement basic training within first 6-months of hire. 
  • Respects the cultures and identities of others.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with health and wellness programs for athletes. 
  • Experience in an NCAA Division I Athletic Program. 
  • Familiarity with total work systems (such as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, and Baldrige National Quality Program); and reviewing and analyzing data. 
  • Training in health equity and other diversity and inclusion topics.
