Overview

The Research Assistant's responsibilty would primarily involve getting blood for captive vampire bats (5-6 hours, once per month) and scoring videos of behavior (10 hours per week).

 

This position is temporary. 

Responsibilities

  • Collect blood to feed vampire bats:
    To feed our captive vampire bat colony, the assistant would collect, bottle, and freeze beef blood once per month. They would drive a Princeton-owned vehicle to a meat processing plant and back (1.5 hours each way), pour blood from gallon jugs into quart jars and store them in a freezer, clean and sterilize the sink and nearby surfaces, and update blood supply records (total time = 5-6 hours per month).

  • Measure animal behaviors on video:
    To collect measures of vampire bat behavior, the assistant would watch and analyze videos from surveillance cameras. This task requires training in identifying individual animals and their behaviors (total time = 10-15 hours per week)

 

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Need to be able to drive a truck, carry 10+ pounds up and down stairs, and use Microsoft excel.
  • Must be reliable and motivated.
