A fully accredited facility, University Health Services (UHS) at Princeton University provides responsive, high quality clinical, preventive, and consultative health services to over 8,500 Princeton undergraduate and graduate students and their dependents, and occupational health services to Princeton University faculty, staff, and employees. The Physician provides primary health care to Princeton undergraduate and graduate students and their eligible dependents.  The scope of practice for a physician may extend to certain circumscribed roles regarding faculty and staff, the provision of courtesy care to some visiting athletes, limited care regarding other visiting students, and first aid for campus visitors as outlined in the “scope of practice” policy.

Responsibilities

  • Provides outpatient primary and acute care consistent with UHS policies and procedures. Primary and acute care includes:
    • Taking a history and doing a physical examination
    • Ordering and interpreting laboratory tests, ordering and preliminarily interpreting imaging and other diagnostic studies
    • Referring to appropriate consultants when indicated
    • Performing minor surgical procedures such as simple suturing and incision/drainage when qualified
    • Administering medication
  • Provides management of emergencies and life-threatening conditions.
  • Issues prescriptions consistent with the NJ Administrative Code.
  • Documents all clinical activities in a timely manner and according to University Health Services protocols and guidelines.
  • Communicates with students when they are away from campus, using electronic and telephonic methods in a manner that is consistent with good medical practice and regulatory constraints.
  • Educates patients regarding their illness and health concerns and encourages their participation in treatment planning.
  • Maintains professional standards regarding relationships with patients, in a manner consistent with NJBME and professional organizations’ standards.
  • Seeks only those privileges for which they have training and competence
  • Maintains professional standards in the management of confidential information and treats interactions with patients as privileged communications.
  • Complies with regulatory requirements, such as reporting reportable diseases.
  • Participates in various committees and work groups according to the needs of UHS.
  • Maintains current certification in CPR and AED with annual training sessions.
  • Maintains current licensure in NJ, and current CDS and DEA registrations and will comply with NJBME and other regulatory standards. In addition, a physician will practice in a manner consistent with the standards of her/his professional specialty board.
  • Completes standard in-house training in blood-borne pathogens and certain occupational risk areas, as determined by Occupational Health and the Director of Medical Services.
  • Provides consultative guidance when requested by another UHS professional. The UHS model fosters a collaborative relationship between physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and administrative support staff.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • New Jersey license as an MD or DO.
  • Completion of Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or Pediatric residency training
  • 3+ years of post-residency clinical experience and 2 or more years of experience in an ambulatory care or related setting.
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification (CPR), Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) for healthcare workers certification and the appropriate continuing education credits as required by certifying organization.
  • Demonstrates respect, curiosity, and an open mindset regarding those of different identities and cultures.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • College Health experience
  • Familiarity with total work systems (such as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, and Baldrige National Quality Program); and reviewing and analyzing data.
  • Training in health equity and other diversity and inclusion topics.
