Overview

Princeton University Library is seeking a Library Collections Specialist at the Mendel Music Library. This library assistant position supports collections services, public services, course reserves, and general operations.

 

The Mendel Music Library is a branch library with collections that include books, music scores, sound and video recordings, journals, and rare materials. As a fully engaged member of the Mendel staff, the Library Collections Specialist will help to serve Princeton’s vibrant music and performing arts community, which includes the Department of Music and the programs in dance, music theater, and theater at the Lewis Center for the Arts.

Responsibilities

  • Leads stacks and collection maintenance projects, processes serials, and sends items for binding and conservation
  • Contributes to Public Services by responding to and processing patron requests, checking library materials in and out, placing holds, and managing paging requests
  • Processes faculty course reserve requests and digitizes course materials, facilitating world class research
  • Assists in supervising the public services student staff
  • Scans print materials for reserves and document delivery services

The Library Collections Specialist will typically work 10am-6pm, Monday through Friday, in the Woolworth Center for Music, but may occasionally work 9am-5pm, especially when classes are not in session.

Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of library experience or equivalent, with demonstrated abilities in collections or circulation
  • Basic knowledge of music, musicians, music performance, and genres
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Initiative, flexibility, and ability to adapt to changing work priorities
  • Familiarity with Alma or another ILS system
  • Facility with email, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office applications, along with a willingness to learn new technology
  • Demonstrated organizational and project coordination skills
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team-based environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Physical requirements include the ability to box and unpack material, handle heavy books and boxes, and the pushing and pulling of heavy book trucks. This position requires frequent bending, reaching, and grasping
  • High School diploma or GED

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or some college-level coursework in music or performing arts
  • Ability to read music
  • Supervisory experience
  • Proficiency with searching OCLC (WorldCat, First Search) and other major bibliographic databases
