Overview

The Department of Politics seeks a Communications Associate for the Arab Barometer.  This individual will promote and disseminate findings through media relations, in both Arabic and English, and play a large role in event planning including the training workshops in the region. The Communications Associate will serve as initial point of contact for media and policy inquiries. The associate will also reach out to print, broadcast and online media through press releases, media advisories and pitch calls, while leading efforts on social media outreach to promote the Arab Barometer’s work.

 

This is a full time, 18 month term position, based in Washington D.C. The possibility of renewal exists depending on performance and grant funding.

Responsibilities

  • Develop strategies and tactics to best serve the media, key stakeholders and interested parties in MENA and the U.S.
  • Assist with digital outreach including website and social media in Arabic and English
  • Oversee planning for training workshops to train key stakeholders in MENA in how to successfully use project data
  • Serve as initial point of contact for external inquiries, especially media inquiries
  • Respond to incoming media requests promptly, accurately and efficiently
  • Reach out to print, broadcast and online media in the Arab world, the U.S. and beyond through press releases, media advisories and pitch calls
  • Take responsibility for creating, updating and maintaining lists of media and other key stakeholders
  • Identify new people and organizations within the target audiences
  • Track success of written reports, media outreach, and other external outreach activities

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in communications, journalism or related field
  • 3-5 years’ experience in communications, including media relations
  • Background working with press corps and public-policy community in MENA and the U.S.
  • Background in event planning
  • Strong writing skills and ability to work on a variety of materials for different audiences
  • Knowledge of Salesforce or similar contact databases
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Fluency (spoken and written) in Arabic and English
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of MENA issues, as well as those at the intersection of religion and public affairs
  • Ability to work with numbers and statistics
  • Strong skills in organization, ability to balance multiple project, and to meet multiple deadlines
  • Ability to work strategically and collegially with the Arab Barometer team
