  • Overview

    As a member of the Enterprise Application Performance Monitoring & Security team, the Lead Monitoring & Security Systems Engineer, Enterprise Application Performance Monitoring & Security, reports to the Associate Director, Enterprise Application Performance Monitoring & Security and is responsible for designing, delivering and supporting enterprise monitoring solutions and security infrastructures. This position works collaboratively on the deployment and support of tools used to monitor and secure critical and large-scale networks, systems, applications and business services, so the University’s research, academic, and administrative activities can be conducted with minimal unplanned interruptions and with appropriate levels of security.  For these purposes, the Lead Engineer will work closely with the Service Management Office, colleagues in the Office of Information Technology and other stakeholders to understand requirements to design, deliver, and maintain integrated and end-to-end monitoring and security solutions.

    Responsibilities

     

    • Lead the technical design and deployment of Enterprise monitoring technologies used in support of faculty, students, and staff in their access to and use of a variety of IT services and applications, both on-premises and off-premises.
    • Analyze performance data, identify service improvements and, recommend corrective actions and process improvements for monitoring and security infrastructure. 
    • Assist other technical staff.
    • Work with University stakeholders as necessary, vendors, and IT staff to understand enterprise-level monitoring and security requirements and needs.
    • Test new and emerging monitoring and security solutions for supporting research, teaching, and administrative applications.
    • Participate in regular operational reviews, including performance reporting and continuous improvement progress.
    • Maintain and improve alerting and monitoring of all systems, applications and critical infrastructure.
    • Analyze and troubleshoot problems with current services.
    • Maintain key performance indicators for supported services.
    • Maintain documentation, protocols and procedures related to deployed architectures.
    • Manage and maintain vendor relationships.
    • When provided access to personal, proprietary and/or otherwise confidential data, maintain such data in the strictest confidence and follow procedures to ensure the privacy, security and proper use of data.
    • Deliver presentations and reports on monitoring and IT security infrastructure topics as needed.
    • Keep abreast of emerging technologies in area of responsibility. Serve as champion for new techniques as appropriate.

     

    Qualifications

    • Proven track record of delivering and maintaining monitoring and IT security systems through all life-cycle.
    • Strong experience with monitoring and IT security systems
    • Strong experience with design and development of monitoring services.
    • Aptitude for learning and sharing knowledge, and the ability to build strong working relationships with IT colleagues, University colleagues from other departments, and vendors.
    • Very good oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to take initiative
    • Ability to respond promptly and professionally to customer requests.
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience working with enterprise-class infrastructure systems.
    • Strong Experience with Windows and Linux Systems.
    • Strong Experience with automation coding.
    • Proven experience with work on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
    • Experience with monitoring systems such as Nagios and Microsoft System Center Operations Manager
    • Experience with firewalls and file integrity checking systems
    • Demonstrated successes working in a collaborative environment as well as independently.
    • Ability to learn new technologies beyond core area of knowledge and to stay current with the latest monitoring and security infrastructure trends.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse customer base having varied levels of technical proficiencies.
    • Proactive approach to seeking information and ideas from peers, supervisors, and members of the Princeton community.
    • Ability to handle multiple priorities.  

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Working knowledge of throughput, latency, memory and CPU utilization  
    • Working knowledge of Network monitoring and packet sniffers (e.g. Big Switch, TcpDump, EtherPeek) 
    • Working knowledge of operating system design/tuning (e.g. Linux, Windows) 
    • Working knowledge of database tuning and administration (e.g. Oracle, MS SQL, MySQL)
    • Experience with firewalls and file integrity checking systems
    • Experience in validating the performance of multi-tier applications
    • Experience working in major enterprise IT projects

    Education

    Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
