    Reporting to the Vice Dean, the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education in the Woodrow Wilson School (WWS) is responsible for student and administrative operations of the Undergraduate Program Office.


    The Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education has principal responsibility for managing the undergraduate curriculum and its teaching budget, and for the administration of the undergraduate program. The curricular duties include managing approximately 60 courses and seminars, and six overseas programs, offered each academic year. The administrative duties include serving as the Departmental Representative on university issues related to approximately 250 Woodrow Wilson School undergraduate majors, supervising the staff of the program (currently 4 people), managing the program budget and its endowment funds, and directing the funding process for internships and senior thesis research.


    The Associate Dean is a voting member of the program's Faculty Committees on Curriculum, Advising and Prizes, and a member of the School's senior staff, which provides advice to the Dean and Vice Dean on curricular and administrative issues. The Associate Dean is an integral member of the School’s leadership team and regularly interacts with other members of the Dean’s senior staff -- including the other associate deans responsible for communications and public affairs, finance and administration, and the graduate program -- to effectively manage the undergraduate program.


    Duties and Responsibilities:


    Curriculum Management: The Woodrow Wilson School's Undergraduate Program is a department of the University that offers a major in public and international affairs. The department offers approximately 30 courses and 25 junior seminars each year; it also supports 10-15 courses offered by other departments. The Associate Dean has principal responsibility for managing the undergraduate curriculum, its teaching budget, and its preceptor (teaching assistant) allocation; the School engages and supports 75-100 precepts for its lecture courses. Five or six of the junior seminars are offered in the department's overseas programs; the Associate Dean has responsibility for developing those programs and identifying faculty to teach in them.   The position requires a close working relationship with the Office of International Programs and the Office of the Dean of the College on curricular issues.


    Office Supervision and Budget Management: The office is responsible for maintaining a course information system and a student information system, for managing student intake and advising, for providing internship and thesis funding, for supporting the faculty committees and providing assistance to new and visiting faculty, and for responding to student inquires. The budget is complex and growing; it involves office operations, course support, domestic and international funding for students, reimbursements to faculty here and abroad, and international salary payments. Management of the Office requires continuing consultations with the staff members and constant supervision of office activities.


    Student Advising: The Associate Dean oversees the course advising and senior thesis advising provided by the Department. As a member of the Advising Committee, the Associate Dean supervises the course selections of a share of the current and incoming students, including all those planning to study abroad; approximately 125 students choose the major each year.   As Departmental Representative, the Associate Dean is involved when students get into academic difficulty, need to take a leave, wish to return to Princeton, or seek academic credit from other institutions. This requires a close working relationship with the Deans of the Residential Colleges and with student support services on campus.  


    Faculty Consultation. The Associate Dean works closely with the faculty who teach undergraduate courses, who supervise undergraduate students, or who serve on the Committees of the department; this requires special attention to new, visiting, or overseas faculty members. The Associate Dean also works, almost daily, with the Vice Dean on curriculum issues, and frequently with the Dean on both curricular and administrative matters.



    Essential Qualifications:


    The candidate should have a Master’s degree and seven to nine years’ related experience in an academic environment.


    The candidate should have excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated interpersonal and written and oral communication skills.


    The candidate must be able to establish rapport and relate positively to people with a variety of interests, backgrounds, and points of view by using tact, diplomacy, and discretion. Likewise, the Associate Dean must exercise good judgment and integrity while working collegially with faculty, students, and staff.
