  • Overview

    The Production Manager handles all of the production details related to roughly 150 events each season presented by the Department of Music and Princeton University Concerts. The Music Department hosts an active performance program of both faculty and student events.


    This position will work with faculty, staff and students to produce a wide range of events, both student and professional, including but not limited to the Princeton University Orchestra, Princeton University Glee Club, Princeton University Jazz Ensembles, the Princeton Sound Kitchen (the Department's new music series), and Student and Faculty performances.


    The Department also includes Princeton University Concerts, a nationally renowned presenting series that presents professional artists from all over the world.


    In addition to overseeing the production details for concerts, the Production Manager manages the scheduling and operations of Taplin Auditorium and the Lee Music Room in the New Music Building at the Lewis Center for the Arts. Taplin Auditorium is the Music Department’s primary concert venue and musical laboratory, and the Lewis Center for the Arts is the University's newly opened Arts Center that is home to the Lee Rehearsal and Performance Room, the primary rehearsal space for the Department’s instrumental ensembles.


    The Production Manager also works with campus partners at the Lewis Center for the Arts and Campus Venue Services to manage and schedule events in shared spaces including the Co-Lab and Forum at the Lewis Center. The Production Manager is responsible for a myriad of project budgets and works collaboratively with the Department's Business Manager to ensure quality and fiscal accountability. The Production Manager oversees three staff support positions: two production assistants and one audio engineer. The Production Office is expanding and may include a fourth staff member, a parttime audio engineer, by the end of the year.


    This is a fulltime staff position. The Production Manager is expected to attend evening and weekend events.

    This is a term position until June 30, 2019 with the possibility of renewal.


    Taplin Auditorium and Lewis Center Management - Day-to-day auditorium and rehearsal space operations, management, scheduling, and supervision, including overseeing and scheduling production crew as well as other independent contractors - including tracking all expenses related to that work - working in conjunction with the Chair of the Music Department to set scheduling policy, scheduling the hall and enforcing the Department’s scheduling policies, running a weekly production meeting to review performance/production needs for users of Taplin Auditorium, the Lee Rehearsal Room, and other spaces in which the Department is producing events, reviewing the resources of both facilities and making annual recommendations for maintenance and improvement of the facilities, maintaining and overseeing use of instruments that are stored in both places.  Overseeing a staff of three, and any potential additional support staff that support productions. The Production Manager is also the liaison to any support staff from Campus Venue Services.

    Program support - The Production Manager is the first line of support for all Music Department events, including but not limited to collaborations with the Lewis Center for the Arts and performances in non-traditional spaces both on and off campus. The Production Manager will create and maintain the Department’s master event calendar. The Production Manager will offer production support to Princeton University Concerts including pre-production planning, working with artist management, scouting new venues, working with the Director of PUC on new initiatives, acting as a liaison to the production staff at Richardson Auditorium, attending dress rehearsals and concerts. The Production Manager will work collaboratively with the Marketing and Outreach Manager to ensure that faculty and students market their events according to Department policy. The Production Manager will also play a key role in soliciting and reviewing all of the recital proposals for students completing degrees and will act as a mentor to students in the planning of their programs.

    Production Planning and Strategy - The Production Manager will create project timelines, budgets, production schedules, and create and manage schedules for staging and rehearsals. The Production Manager will also be the producer and project manager for any of the Department’s large-scale public events.  The Production Manager will work collaboratively and strategically with faculty and students, will publicly represent the Music Department as a liaison with key partners, including the Lewis Center and Campus Venue Services, and will be ready to provide input and support to the Chair of the Music Department in key strategic decisions related to the expansion of department events, facilities, and equipment.  The Production Manager will help support the vision of both faculty, artists-in-residence, staff, and students by taking an active leadership role in the planning of events and developing new projects for the future.  The Production Manager will create project timelines, budgets, production schedules, and create and manage schedules for staging and rehearsals. 


    Tour Manager - The Production Manager will be the main producer of all details and logistics for ensemble touring when needed, including but not limited to overseeing tour budgets; working with the tour companies on logistics; overseeing marketing materials; working with ensemble directors to choose performance venues; and sometimes accompanying the groups on tour.


    Other specific Production tasks include:


    -Rental of rehearsal space when needed

    -Rental of instruments

    -Management of all of the Department’s instruments

    -Creating a plan for acquiring and maintaining the Department’s pianos and percussion equipment.

    -Contract and arrange for all piano and percussion moves, and piano tunings

    -Contract sound and recording staff and equipment as needed

    -Contract production personnel, including communication with artists and artist representatives

    -Oversee maintenance of house sound, lighting, stage and equipment with input from the Department’s audio engineer

    -Handle day of show duties, or schedule and oversee staff to handle duties, including stage management, taking care of artist needs, parking logistics, security, etc.

    -Ensure safety of crew by regular safety meetings and equipment checks.

    -Support course needs and summer programs as needed by faculty and/or Conference Services

    -Oversee the production of concert recordings



    This position requires 5-7 years of concert production experience in a university setting or an arts organization. The Production Manager must be responsible and organized, while maintaining the ability to multi-task successfully. The Production Manager should have experience overseeing the technical support of live performances, from scheduling through the actual events.  The Production Manager must be competent in the use of relevant technology to support productions for public performance including maintenance and use of house sound, lighting, stage and other relevant production equipment. The Production Manager must have a deep knowledge of classical music, and an open-minded interest/curiosity about all music, in particular jazz, world and contemporary music.


    The Production Manager must have excellent communications skills, and the ability to work collaboratively and strategically with faculty, staff, and students.  The candidate must be a team player and demonstrate success working with a wide range of personalities (i.e. students, faculty, professional performing artists, in house production support, stage hands and external production crews). The Production Manager will need to be resilient under pressure to handle and resolve situations calmly and effectively since long show days/nights may be required. He/she must be self-starting, interested in thinking ahead and about how systems can be improved, and able to work independently.  The Production Manager is expected to attend evening and weekend events.
