  • Overview

    The Communications Manager is responsible for the strategic communications for the School of Architecture, including internal and external communications, media relations, and publications, and broadening the impact of School’s public information activities.


    Reporting to the School’s Department Manager, the incumbent will implement and coordinate, from conception to final output, the School's day-to-day media relations, and creative, editorial, and design services. He or she will write, edit, prepare and/or deliver information from or about the School through various print materials and publications, press releases, the School’s website and social media channels, and other material as needed. He or she will also ensure the consistency of the School's message and image across all communications media, and coordinate the quality assurance and production process of all the School’s communications.


    The Manager will advise the School’s management on the development of communications policies, and may manage a communications budget.

    Responsibilities

    Communications, Writing, and Publications:

     

     Key administrative staff who disseminates School-wide communications to internal and external audiences.
     Manage the writing, editing, and publication of the School’s publications and print materials (e.g., School information brochures, annual workbook), and at times, work with School administrative staff on other related materials.
     Collaborate with organizational leadership on the development of new communications/outreach products and initiatives.
     Conduct interviews, write articles, edit, proofread, and distribute content for electronic and print communication.
     Manage the print production of an array of institutional materials, as well as the design and content of the School’s informational brochures, letterheads, and related print materials and publications.
     Help draft key institutional documents.
     Document communications operating procedures and guidelines.
     Work on special projects as needed, such as annual architecture school survey report, where the position will help manage, collect data for, and write the related publication.
     Work with external designer on the design of publications and other print material.
     Often working with University’s Office of Communications, engage and maintain relationships with the press and respond to press requests.
     May assist with the publication of academic papers, presentations, and manuscripts.

     


    Website and Social Media:


     Manage the School’s website and associated social media channels through relevant and timely content updates and content maintenance.
     Create substantive content for the School’s website, associated social media channels and online resources.
     Use digital technology and communications tools, including content management systems such as Wordpress and Drupal; design and editing software such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat; and marketing and   outreach tools such as Google Analytics, Twitter, and Facebook.
     Coordinate website design and functionality updates.
     Develop new uses, strategies, and tools for digital communications, and data visualization and presentation, as needed.

     


    Organizational Support:


     Monitor communications-related analytics.
     Document communications operating procedures and guidelines.
     Coordinate and manage the quality assurance process for the School’s communication projects and processes.
     Oversee a master schedule of School’s communications, publications and print materials and ensure regular review of progress and work with School administration staff to develop and implement realistic timelines for projects.
     Collaborate with the School’s staff to ensure the School materials, where relevant, are consistent in theme and look.
     Maintain School’s various contact and mailing lists, and listservs.
     Develop in-house contact management tools.
     Manage communications data.

    Qualifications

    Knowledge and Skills


     Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, marketing, English or a related field required.
     Master's degree in Architecture or related field is preferred.
     At least 3-5 years of experience in a communications or related role.
     Excellent oral and written communication skills.
     Demonstrated editing and writing experience, with ability to edit for grammar, spelling, accuracy, format, and tone.
     Proficiency with modern publishing and web-based communication methods/tools.
     Experience writing, researching, and interviewing for publications that ranges from press releases and magazines to blog posts and social media.
     Exceptional judgement and organizational skills.
     Ability to manage and meet multiple deadlines with attention to detail and commitment to accuracy; ability to work collaboratively and independently.
     Success in planning, implementing, and managing communications strategies and translating complex concepts/projects into compelling and clear materials suitable for a general audience.
     Flexible and must be adaptive to changing needs and priorities.
     Knowledge of Microsoft Office, (Power Point, Excel, Word) and graphic design software (Adobe Creative Suite 5 or later, including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, etc.) required.
     Experience managing websites using various software systems (e.g., Roxen, Drupal, etc) and managing social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.).
     Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed required.


    Additional Qualifications


     Experience in a university or college setting preferred; as is a background/education in architecture, urban planning, the arts, or design.
     Experience with design, photography, and/or video or television production is preferred.
     Experience working in an academic department within higher education is preferred.
